Good signs

The recently released Nepali movie Kabaddi has once again proved that Nepali movie industry has changed its old route and is stepping towards progress. Being houseful for a week in many theaters across the nation reflects the interest of Nepali audiences towards Nepali movies. Nepali movie industry was in sleeping-stage few years back. However, it has started taking a gradual move towards the right direction.

Only a handful of good Nepali movies were produced in the past. The business it generated or the profit shared by producers was not remarkable at all. However, Nepali audiences have finally changed their taste and mood regarding movies. Viewers, who never used to bother the name or release date or actors of Nepali movies, reach theaters for latest releases today. Especially the elite class audiences in big cities like Kathmandu have started taking Nepali movies seriously. Moreover, they recommend others to watch the movies and even promote them in social networking sites. Definitely, good signs are here now.

Ashis Karki of Sirutaar, Bhaktapur doesn’t remember if he watched any Nepali movies till the completion of his higher secondary school days, except Darpan Chhaya. It was the only Nepali movie he watched in theater, years back with his parents. Being grown up as a younger generation surrounded by modern gadgets and rentable/downloadable foreign movies, he was never fascinated with Nepali movies. Not even the posters, trailers, songs or actors lured him. He was a movie-lover no doubt but always ended up with English or Hindi movies. He neither had an interest in those traditional stories in Nepali films and slow motion dances in hills and gardens, nor in noticeable artificial expressions and lousy dialog delivery of Nepali actors. But since good movies are being made, Ashis flocks to theaters every week, keeping Nepali movies in his top priority of watch-list.

Around a hundred Nepali movies are made every year. We are aware that lack of audiences has drowned the investment of even some good movies in history. Few producers collected the investment, and rest satisfied with investing only in low budget movies. Many producers never attempted to produce movie again in fear of loss. Some top ranking good directors are no more with this industry. Nepali movie industry has lost few wonderful actors as well. Even the reputable names and bright faces of Nepali movie industry have disappeared.

But Nepali movie industry is gradually scaling new heights. Modern tools and equipments are used in shooting. New experiments in narrative are being carried out. Creative ideas are brain-stormed. Directors are qualified with national and international film degrees. Scripts are discussed many times and revised. Dialogs are written as per the taste of audiences. Actors are well trained professionals. New concepts of songs and dances are practiced. These all factors have contributed to change the trend of Nepali movies. Some movies have received both good reviews and profit recently, encouraging directors and producers for new projects.

Movies like Loot, Chapali Height, Sayad, Hostel, Jhola among others collected good revenues from the theater halls and multiplexes. They bucked the trend of Nepali movies struggling in theater for only a single week. Some of the above-mentioned movies sustained for weeks and months in theaters. They received good applause from the people. Movies like Badhshala, Saaghuro, Antaral, Sungava, Apabaad, Uma among others were noticed for remarkable positive response from critics and audiences.

We find massive word of mouth promotion and recommendations through Facebook and Twitter of Nepali movies these days. Thanks to the interest of the audiences, survival of Nepali movie market is guaranteed.

Nepali movie industry has grown to become a market of millions. It has sustained the life of thousands of people through employment opportunities. This blooming creative and glamor industry attracts many. New faces are entering every day to try their luck in acting and directing. Creative concepts are applied by professional directors and producers. Local stories are focused upon, creating original impressions. New investors are ready with a motive of creating good business. Movies are screened even abroad, collecting good revenues. Promotional strategies are changed in creative and better form. Some are first released abroad, then in Nepal. Some movies have been selected for different international film festivals. Few have secured awards in reputable competitions as well.

All these factors have contributed to create a new sign of hope in Nepali movie industry. However, the major concern of Nepali movies still remains: how to pull more audiences to theaters. Since good movies are being produced, Nepali audiences must free themselves from the presumption that Nepali movies are still the same. Movies are being made as per the modern audiences’ taste and demand. One must reach theater and only then make a decision whether to love or hate Nepali movies.
