Youth power

Last month we celebrated International Youth Day. The potentiality of youths and their contribution to national development hasn’t got the attention it deserves. It’s much necessary to enable youths to be active to fulfill their responsibilities. For that, it’s necessary to discuss the challenged faced by youths.

The definition of youth may differ in different parts of the world. But generally, the population on the age group 15-30 is considered as youth, some claim it till 40 as well. Referring to the data of 2011, 28 percent of total population of Nepal comprises youths. This number has certainly risen now, with half of the youth covered by girls.

Youths have high energy and potentiality. They have the zeal to challenge any obstacle and to rule the world. With the support of youths, any nation can attain a greater height in development and prosperity. So, it’s quite necessary to utilize their potentiality in right place. But in Nepal they are not even regarded as a crucial component for the development. Nepali youths are capable enough to join hands for national development, but their energy and potentiality are disregarded and being wasted in different unnecessary stuffs. Moreover, many youths affiliated with different political organizations and parties are busy in fulfilling vested interests of parties and leaders.

In Nepal, we can observe different issues disturbing youths such as family status, poverty, unemployment, poor education, love and relationship, failures, friends circle and so on. When it comes to urban youths, many of them have turned the wrong direction by taking drugs and addictives, by involving in crime to make fast buck and by being influenced by western culture and ditching their parents at the word go. Rural youths are directly suffering from geographical disparity, unemployment, lack of access to opportunities, low competitive education, and traditional mind-set among others.

Our social structure is also one of the reasons for misguiding youths. Poor youths have to start working from an immature age. Without completing their full education, poor youths are compelled to take jobs for supporting their family. They enter the labor force with underdeveloped skills and limited education and it definitely raises a question of effective result and productivity. Lack of proper education, necessary trainings and adequate resources has pushed youths backwards.

Similarly, the paucity of enough and attractive employment opportunities in the country force youths to utilize their energy in foreign lands. Educated youths prefer to settle abroad, whereas unskilled and uneducated ones toil under the harsh sun in the desert and often come home in coffins.

Youths have rights to claim for their future. Youths’ issues should be included in every aspects of society or nation, whether it’s politics or constitution. They should not be limited within education or jobs, but also in leaderships. They should be provided with opportunity to involve in leadership. Youths from local to central level should be addressed in policies and programs of the state. Most necessarily, youths should be empowered to make them capable to compete with other youths from around the globe.

We had seen an impressive youth initiative and leadership in different campaigns: “Converging for making Guinness world record of largest human flag”, “Occupy Baluwatar” or “Butterfly movement”, and currently “Fill the Bucket Challenge”. These days, we even find youths contributing to society by collecting books for library, raising funds for good causes like education to poor and deprived students, supporting victims of natural calamities and many more.

Besides these social activities, youths are also active in their own fields, whether it’s education, sports, arts, science and technology, medicine, entrepreneurship among others. These days, we can see youths united and mobilized through own efforts, keeping all their interests aside. Through these campaigns, Nepali youths have proved themselves capable of leading any initiative. All they need is right track, proper support and adequate opportunities.

Despite being equipped with skills and potentiality, youths have been deprived of opportunities. Often voices of youths go unheard. It goes without saying that youths are the backbone of any nation. Hence, they must be treated with seriousness. Investments should be made in productive sectors, creating good opportunities for youths. By addressing the issues and woes of youths, the state must recognize and acknowledge their roles in nation’s wellbeing. It should encourage the youths to grow and utilize their potentiality through attractive plans and programs. Youths should be given a chance to display and prove their capacity, dynamism and skills.
